To commemorate the World Environmental Education Day WEED 2019, members of MyEnvironment MyWealth chose the Rumuokoro Park to unveil a social project tagged Port Harcourt Anti Littering Campaign.. The event featured sensitization, interactions, donations of bin baskets, stickers and audio CD recordings on Environmental Education on Saturday the 26th of January.
The drivers were given Anti-littering campaign sign up forms which, they filled correctly with the guidance of the members of the organising team.
This strategy was adopted in order for the team to monitor the impact of the campaign, so that they can be properly guided in their next line of action.
More so, members of the Rumuokoro chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers said they are in support of the concept of the organization to help them monitor littering by engaging their passengers. Many of them filled the signup forms as individual partners of MyEnvironment MyWealth. They however complained bitterly about the cost of baskets that the government environment agency collects from them every year and requested that vehicles that received donations from MyEnvironment MyWealth should not be forced to pay the basket levy anymore.
Reacting, the convener and initiator of MyEnvironment MyWealth, Wonne AFRONELLY, stated that the first phase of project is to run from January to June and promised to make enquires from the relevant agencies and find ways of ensuring best practices beneficial to the drivers. She however stressed the need for the drivers cooperation in helping the team actualize their aims of curbing littering and indiscriminate dumping in the city as success of efforts at the Rumuokoro park would determine speedy replication of exercise in various parks, adding that a total of 10,000 baskets had been earmarked for the project. In addition the team promised that Town hall meetings with relevant agencies and drivers would be set up in due time.
